London a popular home, survey finds

The population of London has been found to have risen over the last ten years, as a growing number of people from abroad consider the capital a good place to live.

A survey by HBOS has found that nearly two million people arrived in the city from abroad between 1998 and 2007.

This is in addition to the 1.6 million that moved to London from elsewhere in the UK, contributing to a rise in population of 370,000.

Halifax chief economist Martin Ellis noted that the south-east of England as a whole has been particularly popular in the last decade, adding: "There have been significant population movements across the UK over the past ten years."

London mayor Boris Johnson recently described the capital as "one of the most exciting places" in the world, as he promised investment in transport and policing in order to further improve the quality of life for residents.
